The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has released a report highlighting significant challenges individuals face when trying to access their personal data under GDPR.
Some of the major obstacles identified include:
- Complex identity verification processes, which make it difficult for individuals to prove their identity when requesting access to their own data.
- Companies delaying responses or failing to provide requested information within the legal timeframe.
- Conflicts between transparency obligations and data protection concerns, such as cases where providing data access could expose sensitive information about third parties.
The report calls on organizations and public authorities to simplify the data access process and ensure individuals can exercise their rights effectively. As the number of data access requests continues to rise, businesses must find a balance between privacy compliance and user-friendly procedures.
