About LGPD

The Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (LGPD), Brazil’s equivalent to the GDPR in Europe, is a robust data protection law aimed at safeguarding the personal data of Brazilian citizens. Enacted in September 2020, LGPD has transformed the data protection landscape in Brazil and applies to any organization, regardless of its location, that processes the personal data of individuals residing in Brazil.

Non-compliance with LGPD can result in significant penalties, including fines and reputational damage. What are the penalties for non-compliance

Maximum fines for noncompliance under the GDPR are set €20 million or 4% of a company’s annual global turnover for the most serious or repeat offenses. The LGPD sets its maximum fines at 50 million Brazilian reals ( around €11 million) or 2% of a company’s annual turnover in Brazil per violation.
