The Council of the European Union adopted a general approach on GDPR enforcement procedural rules on 13 June 2024, designed to improve cooperation among Data Protection Authorities when enforcing the GDPR in cross-border cases. The approach introduces an early resolution mechanism, which allows DPAs to resolve certain complaints before the formal cooperation procedure begins if the organisation has already addressed the issue or if an amicable solution is possible.
This proposed mechanism seeks to make enforcement quicker and more efficient, reducing delays that can occur when multiple national authorities are involved. While further negotiations with the European Parliament are ongoing, this evolution demonstrates the EU’s intent to strengthen GDPR enforcement and cooperation frameworks.
